Human Computer Interaction in IT in Work Groups Design and Implementation

Professor Jonathan Grudin's research in CSCW has involved the design and development of human-computer interfaces to interactive systems, in particular, to CSCW systems in the form of groupware. He has concentrated on specific design features and on historical and organizational influences that shape the way interfaces are developed. His research has centered on the importance of user involvement during the development of a CSCW human-computer interface and on the obstacles encountered when involving potential end users in the development process. In addition, he has published articles about the history of CSCW and the challenges facing developers of groupware. His research has shown that costly failures in groupware design are the result of a lack of understanding of the group processes involved in the use of groupware which are quite different from those in a single-user or organization-level software system. Groupware applications have both the interface design challenges faced by single-user applicaons (since individuals interact with groupware interfaces) and the social challenges involved with group interactions.

His current research focuses on the conditions promoting successful adoption and use in environments that had not previously experienced success with groupware. For more information about Professor Grudin's research, http://www.ics.uci.edu/~grudin
