Invitation
This was an
invitation-only workshop to honor the contributions of the late Professor
Rob Kling as founder of Social Informatics. The workshop focused on paper
presentations related to Social Informatics and, in particular, to extending
Dr. Kling's research on computerization movements (CM). Attendees were
also invited to contribute personal memorial tributes to Professor Rob
Kling. The workshop ended with a discussion of the future of social informatics.
The
workshop was held at the Beckman
Center of the National Academy of Sciences and Engineering at the
University of California,
Irvine on March 11-12, 2005. It was hosted by the Center for Research
on Information Technology and Organizations (CRITO),
University of California, Irvine. Professor Kenneth
L. Kraemer, Director of CRITO, and Margaret
Elliott, Research Specialist, planned and coordinated the workshop.
The workshop was supported by grants from the U.S. National
Science Foundation (NSF) (Grant No. 0349404), California
Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Cal-(IT)2),
UC Irvine's Donald Bren School of Information
and Computer Sciences and UC Irvine's Office of the Vice Chancellor
for Research and Graduate Studies.
The workshop will result in publication of selected submitted papers in
an edited book and/or special issues of The
Information Society, of which Rob was the Editor from 1995 to
2003. It will also result in a bibliography of Professor Kling’s publications.
